Forest Lawn is a neighbourhood in the southeast quadrant of the City of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The area was first settled in the early 1900s. In 1952, the districts of Hubalta, Albert Park and Forest Lawn were incorporated as the Town of Forest Lawn. In 1961, the town was dissolved and annexed by the City of Calgary. The community has an area redevelopment plan in place.[3]

The multicultural International Avenue (17 Ave SE) runs through the centre of the community, which is bounded to the north by 8th Avenue and to the south by 26 Avenue. The community of Radisson Heights lies to the west, while Penbrooke Meadows lie to the east.

The community is represented in the Calgary City Council by Ward 9 and 10 Aldermen Gian-Carlo Carra and Andre Chabot.[4] On a federal level, Forest Lawn falls in the electoral district of Calgary East and is represented in the House of Commons by MP Deepak Obhrai.

In 2006, Forest Lawn along with Radisson Heights were the first communities in Canada to have their own Wi-Fi internet service and was managed by WestNet Wireless.[5]

Demographics

In 2006 the neighbourhood had a population of 7,857. Residents in this community had a median household income of $40,396 in 2000, and there were 27.5% low income residents living in the neighborhood.[1] As of 2000, 18.6% of the residents were immigrants. A proportion of 29.4% of the buildings were condominiums or apartments, and 57.7% of the housing was used for renting.[2]

Education

The community is served by Forest Lawn Senior High, Jack James Senior High, Ian Bazalgette Junior High , Ernest Morrow Junior High, Patrick Airlie Elementary public schools, as well as Holy Trinity Elementary (Catholic).

Forest Lawn Industrial

The neighbourhood of Forest Lawn Industrial is established south of International Avenue, and east of 48 St SE, between Elliston Park and 48 St SE. In 2006, it had 108 residents[6], with a median household income of $27,945 in 2000.[1]
